A Practical App Permission Checklist Before Installing
iOS Install Field Guide
App Store, TestFlight, profiles, and permissions explained before install.
App permissions are not automatically bad, but sensitive permissions should match the feature you are using. A photo editor may need camera and storage access; a calculator usually should not need contacts, SMS, or accessibility access.
High-signal permissions to review
- Location: needed for maps, delivery, weather, or local services, but not every app needs precise background location.
- Contacts: reasonable for messaging or invite features, risky when unrelated to the app's function.
- SMS and phone: should have a strong reason, especially outside banking, authentication, or carrier apps.
- Accessibility: powerful on Android; only grant it to tools you fully trust.
- Notifications: useful for messages and alerts, but unnecessary apps can become spammy.
Simple review order
- Install from an official source.
- Open the app and deny nonessential permissions first.
- Enable sensitive permissions only when a feature clearly needs them.
- Review permission settings again after major updates.
